Welcome to the First Presbyterian Church of Commerce

Worship

Worship is the heart of the church’s life and ongoing ministry.   At First Presbyterian Church of Commerce we worship as a community to come and draw from the wellsprings of life we have found in God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.   Our worship is created in accordance to the guidance given in The Book of Common Worship and in accordance to the Directory of Worship (part of our Book of Order).   As reformed Christians we seek to have worship be orderly in content but joyful and spirit filled in its feel.  We have a traditional form of worship and use the common lectionary as a basis for scripture that is read and preached. We encourage people to be a part of worship by serving as greeters and lay readers and by singing in the choir. Children may serve as candle-lighters.

We celebrate the sacrament of communion on the first Sunday of the month and on other important days of the Christian year.  We also have services on Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and when our session feels it is appropriate.  In times of great joy or sorrow we feel worship is important to the lives of Christians.  We care deeply about baptism and weddings and strive to make them meaningful, reverent and joyful for all who attend services.   Funerals are also a worship service in the reformed faith and we seek to have funerals honor God and the life that God gave in the one who has died.

The First Presbyterian Church of Commerce seeks to be open to any who wish to know Jesus Christ. We understand that those who have not attended worship before or have not attended a Presbyterian worship might feel a little uncomfortable. For this reason we have greeters at every service to answer questions about the service, our church and our building facilities. A nursery is available during worship for children in first grade and under.
